Stage One Strategies
Stage One Strategies is all about freewriting, exploring our own ideas, gathering information, and clustering. We also did an exercise on freewriting, but only three students shared their experiences with parties, drug abuse, and role models. They were all good stories.
Stage one
Today we leaned the three steps of free-writing. They are: Stage one: Explore. Stage two: Organize. Stage three: Write. We read as a class again and we each had to choose a topic about stage one which is explore and free-write about it. I wrote about "A good or a terrible party" because I felt like it was the only topic there that I would have the most experience with. Today's class was fun and I feel like I am getting more and more comfortable with my classmates and Ms. Rivera.
See you guys next class. :)

Today in English
Today we learned about the different strategies but focused more on strategy number one. This strategy was about exploring, experimenting, and gathering information. We also did a free writing activity. It seemed easy since grammatical errors did not matter. So overall i am glad to know that i learned something new.

English 100 - 01/31/2011
Today we had another class session in the computer lab. We discussed on stage one strategies, exploring, experimenting and gathering information. We read on the topic of freewriting and also did an activity. Freewriting is much like writing in a journal, we are free to write whatever comes to mind and relay it onto paper. I enjoyed the activity we did because it gave me a chance to speak my mind about the particular topic I chose. We also read an important tip about writing essays is to remember our audience and to write about something that others would be interested to read as well. I believe this is very important to remember because no body wants to read a boring essay, so we must always consider our audience.
Today's class went great.

EN 100 Writing Process Stage One- Jan. 31, 2011
Today we started on Chapter 2 - The Writing Process: Stage One - Exploring/Experimenting/ Gathering Information. Stage one strategies help the writer write better using techniques as to who are you addressing your message to, what you are writing about and learning how to free write. This of course takes practice but sooner or later it will be 2nd nature to the writer. This helps the reader get a better picture of what is being said and done.
We also went through the online class as a trial to get familiar with our first class on Wednesday, February 2nd. I find this as an interesting topic with the "BLAH BLAH BLAH" (Reminds me of Keisha Coles song LOL) but it helps.

Day03 Jan 31, 2011
Today session was was on Stage one Strategy on The Writing Process. I enjoyed the practice freewriting. After reading the section i learned the important things that should go on the assignment and the Audience are a big part. I enjoyed the section we read by Betsy Jackson "If I Were a Traffic Cop." I agree of where she is coming from but then again everyone feels the same. I do get upset while driving and i see some bad drivers. Then i think to myself that i would do the same for whatever reason. After getting into an accident i drive safe and stay calm if i see bad drivers.
Class Discussion 1-31-2011
In today's class discussion we learned about "The Stage One Strategy", which involved: Experimenting, gathering information, and exploring. We did a exercise based on free writing. It was a lot of fun to be able to express my ideas with words flowing from my mind onto paper. Later we went on Moodle and practiced on posting our replies on our discussion about the stage one strategies. Then Mrs. Rivera had the class practice on posting something on our "All About Me Essay" forum, so she can check of we are on the right track on how to submit our assignment.
Writing Process 01/31/2011
Today we talked about Stage one of the Writing Process--that of which it
consists of exploring ,experimenting and gathering information. These strategies
such as free writing, brainstorming, clustering and gathering information are effective
in attacking your blank sheet constructively with imaginative thoughts.(pg.33)
I find this technique quite useful to the extent that it supports our ideas
in hopes of extending those appointed ideas to the final product of the essay;
which may result in an organized, clean, and informative composition.

Computer Lab: Session Two
We had a very interesting session today on explanations, references, and quotations. I've learned that Plagarism is illegal and that we should citate words and phrases that other people have written or said.
Today, many of us are losing our culture. We've become so "American". It's so amazing how I cannot speak my own tounge when Guam is such a small island. We should know our language.
By the way, Who thought sexist Men as Victims were SEXIEST men as Victims?
No One? Just Me??

01-26-11
Today was my first time in EN-100. The class was fun and interesting. Everyone in there seemed friendly and helpful. We read this story called," The Struggle to Be an All-American GIRL". This story made me realize that I am proud to be a Filipino. I grew up here in Guam. I don't know how to speak much in my language. I am still learning from my famliy and friends. My parents didn't teach me how to speak tagalog untill a year ago. All of us are living the all American lifestyle here in Guam, but i will never forget my roots.
Day02 Jan 26, 2011
Today was the first day i attended a lab session. I was confused of how to start with posting the blog. Now that i understand i actually got the hang of it. Today we read a couple passages and did some reviews on a passage. "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl" was the passage i enjoyed most. I believe everyone should be who they are and not someone their not. It is diffcult to catch on to other cultures but everyone should be proud of who they are. Some people enjoy doing and trying different things but others rather stick to what they grew out to.

Jan- 26-2011
Today we read over an essay called, "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl", written by Elizabeth Wong. In her essay is about her struggle as she finds her identity between her Chinese culture and the American culture.
That is the same situation for me as a Taiwaneseamerican. I always struggle with people that whats my nationality, but i should be the one who decide who i am and nationality , not them.

English Today.
Today was my first day in EN100. It is a different environment from what I am use to,
but i am sure i will get the hang of it. During this class we read "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl," and had a discussion after. This passage made me realize that I am who I am, and that I should be proud of where i came from. So overall I had a great first day and I am looking forward to more of this class.

Reading-Based Writing 01/26/2011
Today we have discussed about Reading-based writing in which we conversed about the importance of citing a context. Citing a context is vital in giving credit to its originator
--failure to comply will result in plagiarism which is not an acceptable scholarship (20).
We also have read three stories which are; Sexist Men As Victims, "Listening to the Air" Guitar,
and The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl-- that of which i enjoyed reading.

Kinds of Support for Reading-Based Writing
Today's session was shared on three methods which are used for us to develop our ideas. They are explanations, direct references to the reading selections, and quotations from the reading selection. We also talked about avoiding plagiarism and writing our essays using the Modern Language Association format. There were two written essay assignments that the class read and they were both entitled "Listening to the Air" Guitar and "an All-American girl". After each readings, we did some exercises on Elizabeth Wong's story and it was a hilarious and tremendous experience with the class because I paraphrased one sentence in a bewildered way.
English Today
Today we read two student essays and answered a few questions about Elizabeth Wong's essay.
In this class, we use the MLA(Modern Language Association) format to write our essays. Great session!

English Lab, 01/26/2011
Today in class, we went over several kinds of support for Reading-Based Writing. We went over the MLA, Modern Language Association, format and we also got familiar with what are citations and a works cited page. Going through this format of writing was a good review, I am glad our text book provides clear and concise directions on what is required when using MLA format. This chapter also provided us with an example of a student essay with documentation and a professional essay with the all the applications we have gone over in this chapter.
As a class we read over an essay called, "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl", written by Elizabeth Wong. The essay is about her struggle as she finds her identity between her Chinese culture and the American culture. This essay reminded me of the Chamorro people's struggle in trying to preserve our culture while we have already been so influenced by the Western-American culture.

Second Day of Class
The second day of class, we continued our lesson in chapter 1. We have touch based on : plagiarism, citation, and work cited (MLA). We read a section on student paragraph with documentation titled "Sexist Men as Victims". We have also read a second section called "Listening to the Air" Guitar. Pertaining to the second section we viewed the way the work cited is suppose to be typed. The third section we viewed a narrative by Elizabeth Wong called "The Struggle to be an All-American Girl". After reading the section we reviewed and answered the questions about the essay. We learned how to paraphrase, blend, and introduce a sentence from the essay. The class was noted that a section called "Writer's Guidelines" in the last part of the chapter will help us in preparing for tests that may be given out in pertaining to that chapter.
English Lab - Jan. 26, 2011
During lab today we began reading on page 19,"Kinds of Support for Reading-Based Writing" and then suddently a knock on the door. We then came across new students that were lost trying to find the EN 100 class. Their names are Chelsey & Michelle (sorry if i have mispelled your name, forgive me) and I would like to welcome you to the class! Well back to reading we went and what we went over are citing our work - MLA format, plagiarism and that plagiarism is an AUTOMATIC FAIL so students don't do it. We all should practice the MLA format because it is very important when writing formal documentations. We also read about "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl" and that opened my eyes that there are people that actually want to be something they are not and that is natural but never forget where your from. Keep your home grown values because they are who you are and your roots become planted in your soul. Thanks for reading & enjoy your day. Si Yu'us Ma'asse.

English today.
It is the second day of english and here I am posting a blog. Today's class discussion was mainly about underlining, annotating, and outlining. We have a reaction paper to write and a summary as well which would be part of the two-part essay that will be due next class.
Reflections on Mondays session (1/24/11)
We discussed about three things related to the Text-Based of Reading and Writing. The contents are Underlining, Annotating, and Outlining. We also did some exercises by underlining some key points, annotating notes , and outlining each paragraph too. I thought that underlining and annotating the paragraphs was pretty easy then outlining, but as I was browsing and hearing answers from my other classmates, I notice the outlining was not that difficult at all.
Reading Techniques: 1/24/2011
Today, we have discussed about four reading techniques that includes; underlining, annotating, outlining and taking notes. Upon reading these techniques, I find them very useful and appropriate to which it is needed to become a better reader and as well as a note-taker. This shows how much more effort that is needed to become a proficient reader.
jan-24-2011
Today we met in the computer lab and went through underling, annotating and outlining . We also went through some types of writing like personal narrative . Learned how to write a summary is really helpful and save times.
En100 is more difficult for a student who just moved up. More writing skills and methods to make a paper better and understandable for all the readers. Hopefully can learn more skills and methods and use it properly.

English Lab - Day 1
First days of classes was a fast overview of the syllabus and things that we should know and what we will learn. So far we have went over creating an account for the blogger site: www.blogger.com. We will be creating blogs two times a week considering what goes on in class. Today we have started on our text book "Paragraphs & Essays", and got to learn about reading techniques such as: Underlining, Annotations & Taking notes. Learning about how to make quick notes off a 100 word paper will excerise our mind to work so that we will learn ways of studying. Although, I am not too fond of taking notes, I see that this class will help me in the long run but I would like to request more explanation towards what we have to do. The instructor talks too fast and I don't catch some things. Correct criticism is what this is. I could learn to love reading and writing but it will take time. Baby steps will develop to giant leaps by the end of the semester & that is my goal.
English Lab, 01/24/2011
During our first class session, we all got familiar with one another in class with introductions and looking over our class syllabus. The class is only made up of eight students. Hopefully the size of our class will be to our advantage and we will all be more comfortable with one another, therefore making a more effective learning environment.
Today in class, we discussed about the different reading techniques that we may utilize to help us better understand any reading materials we may come across. First, we went over text-based writing and reading related writing. We read an essay in our text and we were able to see the correct ways to underline, annotate and outline the essay. After, we were able to apply what we have just learned with the exercise provided in our text book. The exercise helped me see that underlining the main ideas and annotating will help understand the text a lot more.
I am looking forward to learning more about writing and reading tools that will help me comprehend essays and stories that I will need to read.

Reading Techniques
Today, I registered into Moodle and accepted the invitation to the class blog spot. Our lesson was on reading techniques which gave us ways on how to underline, annotate, and outline different key points. We also did an exercise that made us try to understand the lesson. Though I was a bit confused, I've managed to get an idea how to point out key words and phrases. The lesson also gave me good tips for taking good notes.
Class Discussion of the Day
I have finally registered into Moodle. Part of our class discussion today was about reading techniques, which contained: outlining, annotating, and underlining. We reviewed two exercises, which helped the class get into more depth of the lesson. On our own time we must continue the subject. The class is assigned to complete the exercises in the next subsections and continue on reading the next topics within this chapter. I must get an EN100 book before next week!
